Wealth workout: get a savings rate of 5.4pc

While competition in the mortgage market has faded, the opposite is true for
the savings market. Banks and building societies have fought to offer the
best deals to tempt money through their doors.

Barnsley leads the way

Barnsley Building Society is offering the top fixed-rate bond rates over
three-, four- and five-year terms. The accounts pay 5pc over three years,
5.15pc over four years and 5.40pc over five years, with monthly options
available for those looking for a regular income. Savers can invest between
£100 and £500,000 into the bonds, which can be operated in branch or by
post. Once opened, access to funds is not permitted in the term.
