CREDIT card companies may start charging annual fees in a bid to recoup revenue they could lose following a government clampdown on the industry.
The predication came as internet bank Egg launched its new Egg Money World MasterCard credit card, which charges an annual £12 fee.
The card received a welcome from some commentators, who said consumers should be able to recoup the fee through the benefits offered by the card.
But they warned that Egg was the first major provider to introduce an annual fee and other firms were likely to follow suit following the recent publication of the Consumer White Paper.
