Opting to pay utility, telephone and television bills by direct debit rather than other means could save people up to £230 a year, according to findings from Bacs Payment Schemes.

The study by the not-for-profit industry body behind direct debit showed that by switching to a combined gas and electricity supplier and paying by direct debit, households could save £100 a year, while getting digital TV and broadband from the same company and again paying by direct debit could lead to a £60 saving.
